By sourcing our extinguishers directly from local suppliers like TG Products and CheckFire with their long history of making and distributing extinguishers and related products we know that they are manufactured to the highest standards. Where applicable they are approved to BS EN3 - the standard for portable fire extinguishers.

Customers can either purchase extinguishers from us directly or we can also supply them fitted and and all products carry a 5 year warranty provided that they are serviced in accordance with the requirements of BS 5306.

Extinguisher Maintenance

Fire extinguishers require stringent maintenance to ensure they are safe and will work when needed.  Fire extinguishers are pressurised vessels that can explode when corroded or damaged, and have been known to cause serious injury and even death. British Standard 5306-3:2017 covers the maintenance of portable fire extinguishers, and recommends that, as well as regular inspections by the user, maintenance should be carried out by a competent person (usually a specialist contractor) 12 months after installation of a new extinguisher, and at 12 monthly intervals thereafter.

How often should Portable Fire Extinguishers be replaced?

UK British Standard BS5306 stipulates that every five years water, foam, powder and wet chemical extinguishers (stored pressure variety) require either a test discharge of the extinguisher and subsequent recharging, or replacement.

Hades Fire Protection follows the latest environmental guidelines recommending replacing extinguishers rather than recharging them – (because the residue would have to be disposed of by specialist means)

CO2 extinguishers are recommended to be replaced every ten years.

Do my Fire Extinguishers need Commissioning?

Fire extinguisher / fire blanket commissioning is the initial service of checking and labelling your fire extinguishers/blankets. Fire extinguisher / blanket servicing is carried out every 12 months after the initial service. This is as per the current British Standards and the legislation that makes up the Regulatory Reform Order.

British Standards therefore require On Site Commissioning for all extinguishers installed under BS 5306. This entails a full check of the extinguishers as they arrive on site and the correct weighing, preparation and certification of the extinguishers.

How do I carry out the Monthly Visual Extinguisher check??

Check the following:

  1. A valid maintenance tag is attached.
  2. Extinguisher is mounted in an easily accessible place, no debris or material stacked in front of it.
  3. Safety pin is in place and intact. Nothing else should be used in place of the pin.
  4. Label is clear and extinguisher type and instructions can be read easily.
  5. Handle is intact and not bent or broken.
  6. Pressure gauge is in the green and is not damaged or showing “recharge”.
  7. Location of the extinguisher is easily identifiable by signs.
  8. Annual maintenance tag is signed and dated.
